TV Distribution
Over the years TV has changed dramatically. We started with BBC 1 then ITV then BBC 2 then Channel 4 and finally Channel 5. All these transmissions were only available in analogue until 1998 when digital launched a 40 channel digital service. Digital was a new crisp, sharp picture that was far better than analogue. We then had the launch of HD in 2006 on satellite with Sky. Freeview are currently doing test on a HD service but it is not known yet as to when the service will be available.
Digital uses the higher grade cable CT-100 rather than the old analogue RG6. Making sure you home is wired with CT-100 is essential. A typical set up looks like the image labelled loftbox. We can now distribute more than 1 Sky receiver without the issue of not being able to control the receivers independently.
For flats or big housing estates the typical installation is an IRS (integrated receiver system). This will have 1 dish and aerial array that is then combined and distributed to the dwellings.
In the next month or so there will be the option to distribute via fibre optic which will save on time of installation and cost of cable infrastructure. Fibre also give virtually no loss so it can carry the signal a far greater distance without the need of amplification.
